{"id":5364,"date":"2025-03-28T21:15:08","date_gmt":"2025-03-28T21:15:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/panoramanews.com.ng\/?p=5364"},"modified":"2025-03-28T21:15:08","modified_gmt":"2025-03-28T21:15:08","slug":"why-16-northern-travelers-were-killed-by-mob-in-edo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/panoramanews.com.ng\/index.php\/2025\/03\/28\/why-16-northern-travelers-were-killed-by-mob-in-edo\/","title":{"rendered":"Why 16 northern travelers were killed by mob in Edo\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-5365\" src=\"https:\/\/panoramanews.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/download-1-8-300x289.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/panoramanews.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/download-1-8-300x289.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/panoramanews.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/download-1-8.jpeg 332w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Edo Governor, Okpebholo<\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\nThe 16 northern travelers, who were\u00a0 brutally killed by a mob in Udune Efandion, Uromi, Edo State, were mistaken for kidnappers.<\/p>\n<p>The victims met their glory death on Thursday, while travelling from\u00a0from Port Harcourt to Kano for the Sallah celebrations.<\/p><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\nAccording to intelligence sources cited by Zagazola Makama, the victims comprising mostly Hausa hunters, were were stopped by members of the Edo State Security Corps and local vigilantes, who became suspicious of<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">their hunting rifles, commonly used in Northern Nigeria, leading to false allegations of criminal activity.<\/p>\n<p>Rather than involving the police or security agencies, vigilantes raised an alarm, sparking chaos. Local youths, incited by the false claims, launched a deadly attack on the travelers, killing 16 on the spot. In a horrifying escalation, the mob set the victims\u2019 truck on fire, burning some bodies beyond recognition, while others were thrown into the flames.<\/p>\n<p>Security forces arrived too late to prevent the killings but managed to rescue four survivors, who were rushed to His Grace Hospital in Uromi for medical attention.<\/p>\n<p>So far, authorities have since confirmed the arrest of five suspects as investigations into the incident continue.<\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Meanwhile, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has called for a thorough, transparent and impartial investigation to unravel the circumstances surrounding the alleged killing<\/p>\n<p>In a statement on his Facebook page, Atiku said, \u201cThe unfortunate incident demands a thorough, transparent, and impartial investigation to uncover the truth and ensure that those responsible are brought to book.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe protection of innocent lives must remain paramount, and I urge the authorities to act swiftly and decisively to prevent a recurrence of jungle justice.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJustice must not only be done but must be seen to be done to restore public confidence in our security institutions.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Also, the Edo State government and Dr. Rabiu Kwankwaso have condemned the killings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Edo Governor, Okpebholo The 16 northern travelers, who were\u00a0 brutally killed by a mob in Udune Efandion, Uromi, Edo State,&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":5365,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5],"tags":[1263],"class_list":["post-5364","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-crime","tag-mob-action"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v22.8 -
