The House of Representatives on Wednesday passed for second reading four bills seeking the creation of additional four states in Nigeria.<\/p>\n

In all, the House passed 42 bills, which were categorised under various headings, and were passed for second reading<\/div>\n
The House also passed 38 other bills in its quest to alter the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) and provide several amendments in the ongoing constitutional review embarked upon by the 10th National Assembly.The 42 bills were categorised under different headings and passed after their first presentation for the second reading during plenary presided over by the Deputy Speaker of the House, Benjamin Kalu.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

It was presented by the leader of the House, Julius Ihonvre, and seconded by the House Minority Leader, Kingsley Chinda.<\/p>\n

The four proposed bills seeking the creation of new states include:<\/p>\n

\u201cA Bill for an Act to Alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) by amending Part 1 of the First Schedule and Creating Additional Three States Oke \u2013 Ogun State, Ijebu State and Ife \u2013 Ijesa State and for Related Matters (HB. 1098) sponsored by Rep. Oluwole Oke.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cA Bill for an Act to Alter the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to make provisions for the Creation of \u201cTiga State\u201d from the Present Kano State with Headquarters in \u201cRano\u201d and for Related Matters (HB.1308) sponsored by Rep. Ghali Mustapha Tijani.<\/div>\n

\u201cA Bill for an Act to Alter the Provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) to Create a New State in the South Eastern Region of Nigeria Known as Orlu State and for Related Matters (HB.1430) sponsored by Rep. Ikweagwuonu Ugochinyere.<\/div>\n

\u201cA Bill for an Act to Alter the Provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) to Create an Additional State in the South East Region of Nigeria, Carved from the Existing Five (5) States to be known as Etiti State with Capital at Okigwe and for Related Matters (HB.1998) sponsored by Rep. George Ibezimako Ozodinobi.\u201d<\/div>\n
The bills were passed after Kaku out to voice vote.<\/div>\n
\n

Also, the House passed for second reading a constitutional amendment bill seeking to strip the Vice President, Governors and their Deputies of immunity in a move to curb corruption, and immunity, eradicate impunity and enhance accountability in public office.<\/p>\n

\n

\u00a0Section 308 of the constitution grants immunity to the President, Vice President, Governors and their deputies, exempting them from criminal and civil prosecution while in office.<\/p>\n

However, in a significant move, the constitutional amendment Bill sponsored by Solomon Bob (PDP, Rivers) reads seeks to alter that.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The bill reads: \u201cA Bill for an act to alter the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 to qualify the immunity conferred on the President, remove the immunity conferred on the Vice President, the Governors and their Deputies, in order to curb corruption, eradicate impunity and enhance accountability in public office and for Related Matters.\u201d<\/p>\n

Also passed for second reading, was the\u00a0 Bill to create a constitutional role for traditional rulers, while providing for the recognition of the advisory role for them in the constitution.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
