Oby Ezekwesili, a former Minister of Education, has opened up\u00a0on the heated exchange with Senator Onyekachi Nwaebonyi during Tuesday’s Senate Ethics Committee hearing in Abuja.<\/p>\n

The incident occurred amid the hearing into the sexual harassment petition filed by suspended Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan against Godswill Akpabio, the Senate President.<\/p>\n

According to Ezekwesili, tensions rose when she asked Nwaebonyi, the Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate, to \u201cshut up\u201d after he interrupted her during the hearing.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was addressing the committee when he began speaking over me. I simply said, \u2018Can you please shut up?\u2019 That\u2019s when he lost his composure,\u201d she stated.<\/p>\n

Commendably, she maintained her composure during the altercation, while Nwaebonyi responded with derogatory remarks, calling her an \u201cinsult to womanhood\u201d and “a fool”.<\/p>\n

The former minister had attended the hearing in solidarity with Akpoti-Uduaghan, who is disputing her suspension on a purported gross misconduct, insisting her suspension was because of her sexual harassment allegation against Akpabio.<\/p>\n

Ezekwesili reiterated that her actions were in defence of due process and accountability, stating, \u201cWe cannot allow such matters to be swept under the rug. It\u2019s about justice and integrity in governance\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe petitioner had insisted that he would not proceed with his main petition until he received assurances regarding the two objections he had raised,\u201d Ezekwesili said during an interview on Arise Television.<\/p>\n

\u201cHowever, the panel interpreted this stance as a sign that we were not ready to engage in the matter.<\/p>\n

\u201cThen, suddenly, they also argued that the case was sub-judice because there were two related cases in court.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey mentioned the case filed by the wife of the Senate President and suggested that, based on that, proceedings should not continue.<\/p>\n

\u201cAt that point, Dr. Abiola questioned the very basis for convening the jury. While all of this was unfolding, a certain Senator, whom I will not acknowledge by name, spoke up (referring to Nwaebonyi).<\/p>\n

\u201cHe declared that since we were unwilling to provide any testimony, he was present as a representative of the Senate President, who was the respondent, and that he was prepared to speak because, in his view, we could not continue in this manner.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn response, \u2018I said to him, can you please shut up?\u2019, because we had just been informed that we were not allowed to speak, yet he was doing so freely without any form of an equivalent treatment.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe justification for silencing us was that we were unwilling to proceed without first addressing our objections.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I told him to be quiet and that remark provoked the senator, though he was already agitated.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe was already provoked, his anger stemmed from the belief that we were not taking the matter seriously.\u201d<\/p>\n

The former minister complained about the conduct of public office holders, saying Nwaebonyi\u2019s reaction reflected the \u201cindecorous behaviour\u201d of some public officials in the country.<\/p><\/div>\n

The deputy chief whip\u00a0had criticised the former minister for first calling him a \u201chooligan\u201d and ordering a serving Senator to \u201cshut up\u201d.<\/p>\n

Although he also said he has no regrets about the incident, he added that he still respects Ezekwesili as a woman despite all that transpired.<\/p><\/div>\n
