Pope Francis is not out of danger yet,\u00a0 his doctors said on Friday amid questions over the 88-year-old\u2019s future as head of the Catholic Church.<\/p>\n

The pontiff has been in hospital with pneumonia, after complaining of having difficulties in breathing.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Although he is reportedly improving slightly, allowing doctors to incrementally lower the amount of medication he is taking, he may have to stay at least an extra week there according to Professor Sergio Alfieri, one of his doctors.<\/div>\n
\n\u201cThe question is, is the pope out of danger? No, the pope is not out of danger,\u201d Alfieri told a press conference at Rome\u2019s Gemelli hospital,” he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you then ask whether he is in danger of dying at this moment, the answer is still no.”<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
Speaking further, he added: \u201cThe real risk in these cases is that the germs pass into the blood\u201d, which could result in sepsis, a life-threatening condition.<\/p>\n

What began as bronchitis developed into double pneumonia and caused widespread alarm, fuelling speculation over Francis\u2019s ability to continue leading the world\u2019s almost 1.4 billion Catholics.<\/p>\n

Doctor Luigi Carbone said the pope, who had part of one of his lungs removed as a young man, now has a chronic lung condition and \u201cis by definition a fragile patient\u201d.<\/p>\n

But Alfieri stressed that \u201cwhen we say that the pope is fragile, at the same time, he has incredible resilience.<\/p>\n

\u201cHow many others would have endured all these infections with the workload he has?\u201d<\/p>\n

Francis, who is staying in a special papal suite on the 10th floor of the Gemelli hospital, has been moving between his bed, a chair and an adjacent chapel where he prays.<\/p>\n

He will remain in hospital \u201cat least for all next week\u201d, Alfieri said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we send him to Santa Marta (his home at the Vatican), he\u2019ll start working again as before.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo we\u2019re keeping him here. We\u2019re keeping him here so that when he goes back to Santa Marta, it\u2019ll be harder for him to overdo it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Asked if the pope would be well enough to lead the Angelus prayer from his hospital window this Sunday, Alfieri said \u201cthe pope will decide\u201d.<\/p>\n

Francis has difficulty breathing but is \u201cin good spirits\u201d, and still has the wit of \u201ca 70-year-old, maybe a 50-year-old\u201d, Alfieri added.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis morning I said \u2018Good morning, Holy Father!\u2019 And he with a grin replied \u2018Good Morning Holy Son!\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

But in Francis\u2019s absence from the Vatican, questions are being raised over the future of a leader with a punishing schedule who has been increasingly plagued by health issues in recent years.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know that some out there say my time has come, they are always bringing me bad luck!\u201d Francis quipped to Italy\u2019s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni when she visited him on Thursday, Italian media reported.<\/p>\n

The Argentine is no stranger to the plotting and scheming his health woes inevitably prompt among those keen to get their man in as next pope.<\/p>\n

After undergoing colon surgery in 2021, he joked to a group of Jesuits that \u201cI\u2019m still alive. Even though some wanted me dead\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey were preparing the conclave,\u201d he said, in reference to the meeting of cardinals to elect a new pope after a death or resignation.<\/p>\n

Francis has also undergone hernia surgery in the past four years, is overweight and suffers constant hip and knee pain, which force him to use a wheelchair most of the time.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love this Pope immensely\u201d, Gege Gerald, a deacon from Switzerland, told AFP in St Peter\u2019s Square, summing up the feelings of many faithful.<\/p>\n

\u201cI know he has done a lot of good for the Church, and he will do even more,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

However, Francis is also one of the oldest popes ever \u2014 and though he has said the job is for life, the pope has left the door open to resigning like his predecessor Benedict XVI.<\/p>\n

\nItalian Cardinal Gianfranco Ravasi told the Corriere della Sera on Friday he did not rule out Francis stepping down.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrancis himself has said he had already signed a letter of resignation at the beginning of his pontificate,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The fact that \u201ca fundamental vital function such as breathing\u201d was compromised complicates the matter, Ravasi told the newspaper.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe knee is one thing, but if one feels that the entire body is in difficulty, it\u2019s another thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

French Cardinal Jean-Marc Aveline also said that while \u201ccompletely confident in the lucidity of the pope\u201d, he would not rule out a resignation.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf he considers that it is the best thing for the good of the Church, he will do it,\u201d he told journalists on Thursday.<\/p>\n

But Cardinal Jean Claude Hollerich of Luxembourg said Francis certainly would not bow to pressure from his opponents to quit.<\/p>\n
