The first batch of Nigerians to be deported from the United States in line with President Donald Trump’s immigration policy are due to arrive in Lagos today.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
According to the arrangement, initiated\u00a0 85 Nigerian nationals ares scheduled to to be deported\u00a0 today while in Lagos, today an additional 116 Nigerians remain in detention in the U.S.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Nigeria’s\u00a0Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu,<\/div>\n
has expressed concerns with regard to the deportations, and urged US to humanize and dignify the process.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Odumegwu-Ojukwu in a statement released on Sunday by her media aide, Magnus Eze,\u00a0 disclosed that approximately 201 Nigerians are currently held in U.S. immigration centres, with 85 cleared for deportation.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Also writing in her X account on Monday, February 17, 2025,\u00a0\u00a0the minister said that the Federal Government insists adherence to internationally prescribed guidelines.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
However, the U.S. government has confirmed that all deportees will be flown directly to Lagos. Ambassador Richard Mills Jr. stated that the first group of deportees includes individuals serving prison sentences for criminal convictions and those who have violated U.S. immigration laws.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cThose to be repatriated would be dropped in Lagos. There would not be room for whether it should be in Port Harcourt or Abuja.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cThe first group will be convicted prisoners\u2014those who committed crimes and are in US prisons. Some of them are those who have clearly violated US immigration laws.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cThey appealed but were denied yet they are still in the US. They have committed immigration crimes, people who have been ordered to leave,\u201d Mills stated.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Bianca however expressed concerns over the emotional and financial impact of deportations on Nigerians in the US and their families, emphasising the need for humane and compliant processes.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cWith the new administration in the US, we want a situation where there will be commitments. If there will be repatriation, we want a dignified return.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cAt the moment, we\u2019re told that about 201 Nigerian nationals are in US immigration camps, and about 85 have been cleared for deportation.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cWill there be any way of ameliorating their pains? This has been of great concern to not just Nigerian nationals in the US but family members in Nigeria who depend on them for survival, children whose school fees are paid for by these diasporans.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
\u201cWe are asking as a country whether they will be given ample time to handle their assets or will they just be bundled into planes and repatriated? It will really be traumatic, especially for those who had not committed any violent crime,\u201d she asked.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
The deportation process is a fallout of\u00a0 comes a wider immigration onslaught unleashed on undocumented\u00a0immigrants by the Donald Trump Administration, which was sealed in several executive orders he signed, aiming at tightening immigration policies.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
These include ending birthright citizenship for children of\u00a0 immigrants and declaring a national emergency at the US-Mexico border.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
He also announced the deployment of more troops to the southern border and reiterated his pledge to deport millions of undocumented immigrants.<\/div>\n
