Edo Election Petitions Tribunal: Okpebholo’s defence in tatters as first witness admits to over-voting<\/div>\n

The governorship election petition tribunal in Edo State on Monday witnessed a dramatic twist when Governor Monday Okpebholo\u2019s first witness admitted to over-voting in Ovia South-West Local Government Area, promoting his rattled legal team to abruptly closed their case for the day.<\/p>\n

Usman Majek, 31, from Usen in Ovia South-West LGA, who was called by Okpebholo\u2019s lawyers to testify in defence of the election results caved in\u00a0under cross-examination and confirmed that over-voting had taken place in his polling unit in Ovia South-West, the home local government of Dennis Idahosa, the state’s deputy governor.<\/p>\n

When presented with polling unit results and Exhibit PBA40, the official result sheet, the following exchange took place:<\/p>\n

Counsel: \u201cThat\u2019s your PU result? You signed?\u201d
\nMajek: \u201cYes.\u201d
\nCounsel: \u201cWas there over-voting?\u201d
\nMajek: \u201cYes, there was over-voting.\u201d<\/p>\n

The admission, made under oath, immediately caused caused confusion in court.<\/p>\n

By his admittance, it means that the number of votes cast exceeded the number of accredited voters, which is a contravention of the Electoral Act 2022.<\/p>\n

Following the unexpected turn of events, Okpebholo’s legal counsels for declined to call more witnesses, despite indicating to do so earlier.<\/p>\n

They quickly closed their case and\u00a0requested an adjournment, stating they needed time to reassess their witness strategy.<\/p>\n

Thereafter, the tribunal adjourned proceedings to Wednesday, February 12, to allow the respondents to re-evaluate their case.<\/p>\n

Ifaluyi Isibor, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who spoke to journalists outside the courtroom after the adjournment, hailed the governor’s witness for being honest.<\/p><\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
He added that his testimony had further exposed flaws in the election process.<\/div>\n
\n\u201cI must commend the witness for refusing to lie under oath. He could have tried to cover it up, but instead, he told the truth: there was over-voting in Ovia South-West. That is a direct confirmation that the election was flawed,\u201d Isibor said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWith Senator Okpebholo closing his case after just one witness, just like INEC before him, it is clear they have no defence for the heist they committed.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf they had any credible argument, they would have brought it forward. Instead, they have chosen silence, which in itself is an admission.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
