Alhaji Mohammed Idris, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, has said the Federal Government does not need the approval of Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II for its laudable policies for Nigerians.<\/p>\n

Sanusi had on Wednesday during the 21st Memorial Lecture of Chief Gani Fawehinmi in Lagos, said he would not help the administration of President Bola Tinubu or offer advice on the way out the current economic challenges.<\/div>\n
\n\u201cI don\u2019t want to help the government. They are my friends, but if they don\u2019t behave like friends, I won\u2019t act like one. So, I watch them struggle, and they don\u2019t even have people with credibility to explain their actions,” the Emir said.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I\u2019m not going to help. I started out offering advice, but that\u2019s not happening anymore. Let them come and explain to Nigerians why they are pursuing these policies. In the meantime, I\u2019ll sit back and enjoy a good movie with popcorn.”<\/p>\n

He described the current hardship as a\u00a0 consequence of years of poor economic governance.<\/p><\/div>\n

\u00a0\u201cWe were warned repeatedly, but no one listened. Now, is everything being done today correct? No,\u201d he noted<\/p>\n

However, Idris, in a statement in Abuja on Thursday acknowledged that Sanusi had a right to express his opinion on the state of affairs in the country but added that the Federal Government has many transformative reforms\u00a0for a better Nigeria, expressing disappointment that Sanusi condemned those steps due to personal interest.<\/p>\n

“We find it amusing that a leader, more so, one from an institution that ennobles forthrightness, fairness, and justice would\u00a0 publicly admit to shuffling off saying the truth because of personal interest hinged on imaginary antagonism,” he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is pertinent to state that Nigeria is at a pivotal juncture where bold and decisive actions are necessary to tackle entrenched economic challenges.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis administration has implemented transformative reforms, not because they are easy but because they are essential for securing Nigeria\u2019s long-term stability and growth, as he,\u00a0 Sanusi had consistently advocated.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe temporary pains currently experienced from these inevitable decisions, as Sanusi himself acknowledged, are necessary consequence of decades of irresponsible economic management,\u00a0 more than anything else.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese reforms are already delivering measurable progress. The unification of exchange rates has bolstered investor confidence, which has contributed to increased foreign reserves and strengthened Nigeria\u2019s ability to shield itself from external economic shocks.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe removal of the fuel subsidy has freed up significant resources, allowing for greater investment in critical sectors such as infrastructure, education, and healthcare.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe urge the Emir to rise above personal interests and partisan undertones and prioritise the greater good of Nigerians.<\/p>\n

\u201cRebuilding Nigeria requires unity, focus, and sacrifice from all stakeholders. As a government, we urge esteemed leaders to refrain from rhetorics that undermine public trust.<\/p>\n

\u201cInstead,\u00a0 they owe it a duty to champion the collective goal of a prosperous Nigeria. This is a critical time for our country, what is needed is collaboration, not unnecessary distractions<\/p>\n

\u201cPresident Bola Tinubu\u2019s administration remains resolute in its mission to lead Nigeria toward economic inclusivity, sustainability, and shared prosperity.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis administration is open to constructive dialogue with all well-meaning stakeholders, while remaining steadfast in putting the interests of Nigerians above all else,\u201d Idris said.<\/p>\n
