Dele Farotimi, human rights activist, lawyer, and writer, has reiterated that his advocacy work is based on the truth, and denied telling lies against anyone.<\/div>\n

Farotimi was on Tuesday morning released from the Ekiti State Correctional Centre after meeting his N40 million bail condition.<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

He is facing trial for allegedly defaming Aare Afe Babalola, SAN, in his book on administration of criminal justice in Nigeria.<\/div>\n

Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun of the Ekiti Chief Magistrate’s Court had also ruled that Farotimi must provide\u00a0 two responsible sureties, one of whom must\u00a0 be a property owner within the court\u2019s jurisdiction, submit his travel documents to the court and desist from granting press interviews.<\/div>\n

Addressing his supporters after his release, Farotimi said: \u201cIn my public advocacy and in my fight and wars against the evil empire that we all live in, I have never lied against anyone. If I don\u2019t know something, I will simply say I don\u2019t know,\u201d adding that there was no other way to liberate Nigeria except by truth.Meanwhile, the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) has trashed a petition, which was submitted by Mr. Ola Faro\u00a0of Emmanuel Chambers, the law firm of legal luminary, Chief Afe Babalola\u00a0 SAN, seeking to revoke his licence.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The petition accused the activist lawyer\u00a0 of criminal defamation and professional misconduct due to his comments in his book, “Nigeria and the Criminal Justice System”.The now controversial book made claims about alleged corruption, bribery, and unethical practices within Nigeria\u2019s judiciary and legal profession.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The book cited a Supreme Court case SC\/146\/2006, which involved Major Muritala Gbadamosi Eletu and HRH Oba Tijani Akinloye and others.<\/p>\n

The petition accused Farotimi of distorting case facts, disrespecting legal practitioners, and interfered with justice for personal gain.<\/p>\n

It further contended that the actions of Farotimi violated the Rules of Professional Conduct for Legal Practitioners 2023 and pleaded that Farotimi\u2019s name be struck off the Roll of Legal Practitioners.<\/p>\n

However, the LPDC threw out the request in its ruling (B8B\/LPDC\/1571\/2024), saying the alleged comments credited to Farotimi were made as a writer and not as a lawyer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
