{"id":3491,"date":"2024-11-27T12:22:52","date_gmt":"2024-11-27T12:22:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/panoramanews.com.ng\/?p=3491"},"modified":"2024-11-27T12:25:41","modified_gmt":"2024-11-27T12:25:41","slug":"court-dismissed-sanwo-olus-suit-to-stop-efcc-probe-after-leaving-office","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/panoramanews.com.ng\/index.php\/2024\/11\/27\/court-dismissed-sanwo-olus-suit-to-stop-efcc-probe-after-leaving-office\/","title":{"rendered":"Court dismissed Sanwo-Olu&#8217;s suit to stop EFCC probe after leaving office\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-3492\" src=\"https:\/\/panoramanews.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image1-Sanwo--300x220.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/panoramanews.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image1-Sanwo--300x220.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/panoramanews.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/image1-Sanwo-.jpeg 646w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>By Publisher<\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>Kindly share:<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">The Federal High Court in Abuja has struck out a suit by Governor Sanwoolu Babajide Sanwo-Olu, of Lagos State seeking to bar the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, from arresting him after leaving office.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Joyce Abdulmalik, who presided over the suit, dismissed it, following a motion by Gbenga\u00a0Akande, the governor&#8217;s counsel to discontinue the case.In the suit, the lawyer argued that the alleged plan to arrest Sanwo-Olu is \u201cunconstitutional and a flagrant violation of his fundamental right to personal liberty and freedom of movement as stipulated under sections 35(1) &amp; (4) and 41(1) of the constitution\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, it sought an order of the court to forbid the EFCC to arrest or prosecute Sanwo-Olu in connection with his activities in office as the Lagos State governor.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">However, the Lagos government had said that Sanwo-Olu did not instruct anyone to file a case against the EFCC.Mr Lawal Pedro, SAN, the State Attorney-General,\u00a0 posited that the government would probe how the case was filed without the governor&#8217;s knowledge.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">He added that the governor and his aides are not being investigated or threatened with arrest by the EFCC.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\n<p>This was collaborated in a counter affidavit by Ufuoma Ezire, a superintendent and litigation secretary in the legal and prosecution department of the anti-graft agency, who confirmed that the EFCC is not investigating the governor and has never threatened to arrest him or his staff.<\/p>\n<p>Hadiza Afegbua, counsel of the EFCC,\u00a0 appeared in court for the case for the proceedings\u00a0was disappointed that the case was not among the 10 listed for hearing at the court.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">She reportedly expressed surprise on hearing that the suit had since been dismissed on October 31.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Publisher Kindly share: The Federal High Court in Abuja has struck out a suit by Governor Sanwoolu Babajide Sanwo-Olu,&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":3492,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[294,2,3],"tags":[200],"class_list":["post-3491","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-entertainment-showbiz","category-news","category-politics","tag-babajide-sawa-olu"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v22.8 -
