{"id":2969,"date":"2024-10-24T07:36:00","date_gmt":"2024-10-24T07:36:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/panoramanews.com.ng\/?p=2969"},"modified":"2024-10-24T07:36:42","modified_gmt":"2024-10-24T07:36:42","slug":"2969","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/panoramanews.com.ng\/index.php\/2024\/10\/24\/2969\/","title":{"rendered":"Court slams 11-yr jail term on Canadian lady for importing narcotics into Nigeria"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2970\" src=\"https:\/\/panoramanews.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/download-4-300x253.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"253\" srcset=\"https:\/\/panoramanews.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/download-4-300x253.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/panoramanews.com.ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/download-4.jpeg 332w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>By Publisher<\/p>\n<p>Kindly share:<\/p>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0A Canadian lady, Adrienne Munju, will spend the next 11 years in jail for importing narcotics into Nigeria.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Munju, who was nabbed at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport,\u00a0 Lagos, for drug trafficking three weeks ago,\u00a0was yesterday convicted by Justice Dehinde Dipeolu of the\u00a0Federal High Court in Lagos State and sentenced accordingly.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">She was found guilty of importing 74 parcels of Canadian Loud, a strong strain of synthetic cannabis weighing 35.20 kilogrammes into Nigeria.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency at terminal, NDLEA arrested her at the Lagos airport on October 3, 2024, during the inward clearance of inbound passengers.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">In her statement after her arrest, Mungu claimed that she was recruited to traffic the illicit consignment through an online platform, which promised to pay her 10,000 Canadian dollars upon successful delivery to Lagos.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">She confessed to falling for the bait\u00a0 because she was in need of money to pay for her ongoing Master\u2019s degree programme in Canada.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">\u00a0Munju pleaded guilty to the two charges preferred against her by the NDLEA when she was arraigned in court.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">Femi Babafemi, the anti-drugs agency spokeman, in a statement said the Prosecuting Counsel, Barrister Ibrahim, told the court that the illegal acts of the convict contravened sections 20(1}(a) and 19 of the NDLEA Cap N30, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004 and punishable under Section 20(2)(a) of the same Act.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">He disclosed that Justice Dipeolu found Mungu guilty as charged and sentenced her to six years imprisonment on count one and five years on count two, after listening to the allocutus by the defendant\u2019s counsel.<\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\"><\/div>\n<div dir=\"auto\">However, she was also given an option of N50 million fine on each of the two counts, bringing the total fine to N100 million.<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Publisher Kindly share: \u00a0A Canadian lady, Adrienne Munju, will spend the next 11 years in jail for importing narcotics&hellip;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":2970,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[5,2],"tags":[834,833,57],"class_list":["post-2969","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-crime","category-news","tag-illicit-drugs","tag-narcotics","tag-ndlea"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v22.8 -
