Senator Athan Nneji Achonu, the Imo State gubernatorial candidate of the Labour Party, LP, in last year’s election has tasked members on the need to ensure that peace exists in the party.
\nAchonu, who is the leader of the party in Imo State, spoke after a stakeholders’ meeting held in Umuahia, Abia State.
\nIn a statement signed by Chief Chime Nzeribe, the Director General of the Senator Athan Achonu Campaign Organisation, Achonu dispelled what he described as unnecessary speculations in the affairs of the party.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt has come to our attention that certain individuals are falsely claiming that the State Chairman, Callistus Ihejiagwa, has ceased to hold his position following the meeting,\u201d the statement read.
\n\u201cWe categorically state that these claims are without merit.<\/p>\n
\u201cAt no point during the stakeholders’ meeting, which Senator Achonu personally attended, was there any discussion regarding changes to the state executive of the party.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe fact remains that no congress has been held, and until such a congress takes place, Callistus Ihejiagwa remains the duly recognised State Chairman of the Labour Party in Imo State.<\/p>\n
\u201cFurthermore, we remind all party members that while our National Chairman, Barrister Julius Abure, continues with his legal battles, we are hopeful for a peaceful resolution to all disputes. Our priority is to strengthen the party, not divide it.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs a key stakeholder, Barrister Abure must work with the Labour Party to ensure we emerge stronger and more united. No individual, including Barrister Abure, is greater than the Labour Party.<\/p>\n
“Unity is essential, and our focus is on building an indomitable force capable of transforming both our state and nation.\u201d
\nAchonu acknowledged challenges that the party faces in the state. However, he expressed optimism that they are surmountable if the members remained united and determined.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn Imo State, we face numerous internal and external challenges. However, it is important to note that such challenges are not unusual in a political setting. What matters is how we resolve them.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs the Igbo adage goes, \u2018It is only a dead man whose neck cannot be adjusted\u2019. We must accommodate alternative voices, learn lessons and strive for peaceful resolutions to keep the party on a strong footing.<\/p>\n
\u201cUnder Senator Achonu\u2019s leadership, we will not allow the enemies of the Labour Party to prevail. Any attempt to destabilise our ranks will not succeed.
\n\u201cWe call on all members of the Labour Party in Imo State to remain resolute and committed to supporting the leadership of Callistus Ihejiagwa until a congress is held, and any changes are made through our democratic processes.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor the Achonu campaign, the Abure-led national executive is like the shell of the body, while the stakeholders represent the soul – neither can exist without the other.\u201d<\/p>\n
The former governorship hopeful urged members of the party to be focused on finding a way to deliver to Nigerians the desired change, insisting that only the Labour Party can guarantee Nigeria’s hope for survival.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Labour Party must find a way to come together and ensure that we achieve the Nigeria of our dreams, which only the Labour Party can guarantee.<\/p>\n
\u201cLet us focus on what truly matters – strengthening the Labour Party to deliver the positive change our people deserve,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
