Pastor Enoch Adeboye, the General Overseer of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, has admitted making a mistake in his recent reaching making paying tithe a condition for going to heaven.<\/p>\n
The revered cleric apologised in an address at the ongoing Youth Convention of the RCCG at the Redemption City, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Ogun State on Thursday, describing the comment as a \u201cmistake\u201d.<\/p>\n
According to him, peaceful and holy living are the requirements for making heaven, as stated in the Bible.<\/p>\n
\u201cI apologise for saying \u2018If you don\u2019t pay tithe, you might not make it to heaven.\u2019 I\u2019m sorry, that\u2019s wrong, and it\u2019s not in the Bible. What the Bible says is \u2018Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man shall see God\u2019,\u201d Adeboye said.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt is possible to be right and wrong at the same time. I will prove it to you. I\u2019m a scientist so I know that for years we thought that light travels in straight lines. Later on we discovered light travels in waves.<\/p>\n
“It is wrong to limit you to 10 per cent when someone is talking of 20, 30, 40 per cent. 10 per cent should be for beginners. I believe God will give me an opportunity very soon to give you the details.\u201d<\/p>\n
He narrated the story of a man who pledged to give N3.5 million, equal to the sum of donations of whole congregants during a fundraising at a conference of Kenneth Hagin, the late American preacher.<\/p>\n
Adeboye added that he had since been challenged to pay beyond 10 per cent, as tithe after hearing from the man.<\/p>\n
\u201cFive years ago, I started a company with 500 dollars and I said to God your are my senior partner\u2026, prosper the business and I will not insult you with 10 per cent, I will give you 90 per cent. Five years later my turnover is $50 million,\u201d the man had told Adeboye.<\/p>\n
\u201cFrom that day onward I have been increasing my own steadily. I\u2019ve not reached 90 per cent yet, but I\u2019m far from 10 per cent. It\u2019s wrong for me to say you should be paying only 10 per cent,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Tithe paying is one of the Christian doctrines that have become controversial. It derives from God’s requirement that one tenth of one’s income is his.<\/p>\n
However, while many think it was an Old Testament practice that has no place in the New Testament, others teach and practice it, insisting that no part of God’s word has changed or will change.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
