The purported visit of Yahaya Bello, the former governor of Kogi State to the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, has thrown up more controversies.<\/span><\/p>\n Bello’s media aide had claimed that ex-governor several weeks after he was declared wanted but the anti-graft agency countered the claim, saying Bello did not visit their office and remains a wanted person.<\/span><\/p>\n Ohiare Michael, the Director of the Yahaya Bello Media Office, had in a statement on Thursday stated that the Bello\u2019s decided to honour the invitation on Thursday, following consultations with his legal team and political associates.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cFormer Governor of Kogi State, His Excellency Alhaji Yahaya Bello, today honoured the invitation of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. This decision was made after due consultations with his family, legal team, and political allies,\u201d Michael said.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe former governor, who has great respect for the rule of law and constituted authority, had all the while only sought the enforcement of his fundamental rights to ensure due process,\u201d adding that Bello’s intention is to use the opportunity to clear his name of the allegations against him.<\/span><\/p>\n \u00a0\u201cThe case has been before a competent court of jurisdiction, and Alhaji Yahaya Bello has been duly represented by his legal team at every hearing. It is important for the former governor to now honour the invitation of the EFCC to clear his name, as he has nothing to hide and nothing to fear,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe former governor firmly believes in the efforts of the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to place Nigeria on the path of sustainable economic development and supports the fight against corruption in the country.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIt is on record that he was the first governor of Kogi State to implement an anti-corruption mechanism to curb graft and ensure that the state\u2019s resources benefit its people.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cHe was accompanied to the EFCC headquarters by high-profile Nigerians. We hope that the commission will act professionally and respect his fundamental rights as a citizen of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Details of his engagement with the operatives of the anti-graft agency will be disclosed later.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n However, the EFCC said Bello did not visit their office and remains on its wanted list.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cMedia reports today that a former governor of Kogi State, Mr Yahaya Bello, is in the holding facility of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission are incorrect. The commission wishes to state that Bello is not in its custody,\u201d Dele Oyewale, the EFCC spokesperson said.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cBello, who has already been declared wanted by the commission for alleged N80.2 billion money laundering charges, remains wanted with a subsisting warrant for his arrest.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n The controversy continues as Michael maintained in another statement that Bello was at the EFCC headquarters, adding that the commission refused to interrogate the ex-governor.<\/span><\/p>\n The statement read: \u201cEarlier today, we reported the voluntary visit of former Governor of Kogi State, HE Alhaji Yahaya Bello, to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission office to honour the commission\u2019s invitation.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cIn the statement, we reiterated the former governor\u2019s great respect for the rule of law and constituted authority, and stressed that all the while, he only sought the enforcement of his fundamental rights in order to ensure due process.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe EFCC did not, however, interrogate him, as officials told him he could leave. We don\u2019t know what this means yet. As we write, HE Alhaji Yahaya Bello has left the EFCC office.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cHe was accompanied there by the Governor of Kogi State, HE Alhaji Ahmed Usman Ododo.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cRecall that the case has been before a competent court of jurisdiction, and Alhaji Yahaya Bello has been duly represented by his legal team at every hearing.
