Justice Kudirat Motonmori Kekere-Ekun was on Friday sworn in as the 23rd Chief Justice of Nigeria.<\/span><\/p>\n

President Bola Tinubu swore in Justice pending her confirmation by the Senate.<\/span><\/p>\n

She took the oath of office and signed the oath register at 11.40 am at the Council Chamber of the State House, Abuja.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kekere-Ekun succeeded Kayode Ariwoola, who bowed out on Thursday, upon attaining the mandatory retirement age of 70 years.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Speaking after her inauguration, Justice Kekere-Ekun pledged to tackle the shortcomings within the judiciary head-on to work collaboratively with fellow justices to drive meaningful change.<\/span><\/p>\n

The new Chief Justice promised to address the pressing concerns surrounding appointments within the judiciary.<\/span><\/p>\n

It will be recalled that the 66-year-old Justice Kekere-Ekun, was denied entry to the United States, following a 2020 controversial judgement that sacked the Governor Emeka Ihedioha of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and declared Senator Hope Uzodimma of the All Progressives Congress, APC, as Imo governor, a reason some civil society groups are opposed to her ascension to the exalted office.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nevertheless, her appointment is seen as a progressive step forward in promoting gender equality within the nation\u2019s highest judicial office.<\/span><\/p>\n

Justice Kekere-Ekun brings a wealth of experience and a distinguished career in the judiciary to the role and is expected to influence key legal reforms and further strengthen the independence and integrity of Nigeria\u2019s judicial system.<\/span><\/p>\n
