The \u2018EndBadGovernance\u2019 protests continue in Lagos at Gani Fawehinmi Freedom Park, Ojota, on Monday, August 5, 2024, the organisers said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0This is in spite of President Bola Tinubu’s national broadcast calling for discontinuation of the protests and offered dialogue.<\/span><\/p>\n

The organisers in a statement, signed by Hassan Taiwo, Ayoyinka Oni, and Adegboyega Adeniji on behalf of the #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria Organising Committee, stated that they were disappointed that it took President Tinubu three days of protests to address the nation.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nevertheless, they still saw the \u2018\u2019belated\u2019 protests as a victory for their cause.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe consider the President\u2019s decision to address the nation an important victory for our movement,\u201d the statement said.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWithout our courage and resolve to dare the odds, even this acknowledgement would not have happened. So far, we have demonstrated that a President is not greater than the rest of the country.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

They averred that the president could not be calling for an end to the protests and dialogue at the same time and also condemned attack on protesters by thugs during a Sunday morning worship session and an incident where a protester was struck on live television.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIn our view, the president cannot be approbating and reprobating at the same time. The President cannot offer an olive branch while at the same time holding a dagger to our throat,\u201d the statement added.<\/span><\/p>\n

While urging Nigerians to converge on Gani Fawehinmi Park on Monday for the fifth day of protests, they called for support from\u00a0 the Nigeria Labour Congress, the Trade Union Congress, the media, and the Nigerian Bar Association.<\/span><\/p>\n

The \u2018EndBadGovernance\u2019 protests began nationwide on August 1 to draw attention to the escalating cost of living and hardship faced by Nigerians. Over ten people have lost their lives in the protests.<\/span><\/p>\n
