Telecommunications subscribers in Nigeria have heaved a sigh of relief, following directives by the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, to Mobile Network Operators, MNOs, to reactivate the Subscriber Identification Module, SIM, cards barred from outgoing and incoming calls.<\/span><\/p>\n The SIMs were barred because of the failure of their owners to link them to their National Identity Number, NIN, within the stipulated time.<\/span><\/p>\n However, the NCC has directed a temporary reactivation of the lines to enable the owners to properly link their SIMs to their NIN.<\/span><\/p>\n The Director Public Affairs of NCC, Reuben Muoka, who said this in a statement, maintained that the reactivation was for a limited period.<\/span><\/p>\n Mouka said, \u201cOver the weekend many telecom subscribers\/consumers were unable to access their phone lines because of the inability of many telecom consumers to verify their National Identification Numbers (NINs) with their Subscriber Identification Modules (SIMs). This meant that their numbers were blocked by their telecom service providers in keeping with laws and policies of the NIN-SIM linkage.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cTelecoms consumers and the public will recall the compulsory linkage of NIN with SIM, which began in December 2020 when the government directed telecommunication companies to bar unregistered SIM cards and SIMs that were not linked to NIN.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cSince December 2023, the Commission has since reviewed the deadline a few times; April 15, 2024 was set as the deadline for the full network barring of subscribers with four or fewer SIMs that had unverified NIN details. This deadline was then reviewed to July 31, 2024, to give consumers more time to ensure their submitted NIN details are properly verified. Despite these extensions, many phone lines are yet to be linked with verified NINs.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe objectives of this exercise by the Federal Government of Nigeria include enhancing national security and ensuring the national SIM ownership database is accurate. The NIN-SIM linkage policy aids in verifying and protecting users\u2019 identities while also providing a critical infrastructure that assures access to the benefits of a robust digital economy for the citizenry.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cThe consumer is our priority, therefore, considering the challenges the blockages have caused, the Commission has directed all operators to reactivate all lines that were disconnected over the weekend in view of the short time available for consumers to undertake the verification of their NINs with their SIMs. Reactivated consumers are to note that this is for a limited period to allow them to properly link their NIN to their SIM.<\/span><\/p>\n \u201cMembers of the public who are yet to verify their SIMs are encouraged to do so as soon as possible to maintain access to their lines,\u201d he ended.<\/span><\/p>\n Reacting to the reprieve granted to subscribers, Adeolu Ogunbanjo, National President, National Association of Telecommunications Subscribers, NATCOMS, commended the NCC for the directive.<\/span><\/p>\n He said the move showed that the regulator is responsive to the plights of Nigerians, adding that the directive from NCC has shown that the disconnection had nothing to do with the nationwide protests slated for August 1-10.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" By Amah Kindly share: Telecommunications subscribers in Nigeria have heaved a sigh of relief, following directives by the Nigerian Communications…<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":1286,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[4,10,2,1],"tags":[392,391],"class_list":["post-1285","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-business-economy","category-ict","category-news","category-uncategorized","tag-national-association-of-telecommunications-subscribers","tag-nigerian-communications-commission"],"yoast_head":"\n
