The Inter-Party Advisory Council, IPAC, has frowned at the move by the\u00a0 Senate to create a Local Government Independent Electoral Commission, saying it is unnecessary.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0Sen. Sani Musa has sponsored a bill for creation of the commission, which the Senate is currently considering.<\/span><\/p>\n

However, IPAC has kicked at the move, describing it as unacceptable and unnecessary because it would result in duplication of functions and waste of public funds.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Chinyere Ogekalu, IPAC said:<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0\u201cCreating another commission will not address the challenges faced in conducting local government elections. Instead, it will lead to unnecessary duplication of efforts and resources.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThe proposed commission will still rely on INEC\u2019s voter register, IREV, BVAS, ballot boxes, and other resources to conduct a successful election.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cRather than creating another commission, we should focus on building the capacity of INEC to conduct free, fair, and transparent elections at the local level. This is especially crucial at a time when the government is grappling with limited resources to cater to the welfare of citizens.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWe urge the Senate to reconsider this proposed bill and prioritize the strengthening of INEC to deliver credible elections at all levels 2.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
