The Lagos State Police Command has commenced disciplinary action against a police officer captured in a viral video making partisan and derogatory comments about former Anambra State governor and 2023 presidential candidate Peter Obi and people of Igbo extraction.<\/p>\n
The officer, identified as Osumah Frank, was seen speaking while travelling in a public transport vehicle, where he made categorical statements about Obi’s chances in the 2027 presidential election and linked the politician’s prospects to his Igbo identity.<\/p>\n
In the video, Frank reportedly declared that Obi could not become President of Nigeria because he is Igbo. He also made disparaging remarks about what Abuja would become under an Obi presidency, including references to Internet fraud, popularly known as Yahoo Yahoo.<\/p>\n
The officer further compared Obi with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, describing Obi as too small to stand beside the two senior politicians.<\/p>\n
He also asserted that the 2027 presidential contest would be between Tinubu and Atiku and that Obi had no realistic chance of winning.<\/p>\n
The remarks, which circulated widely on social media, prompted the Lagos State Police Command to distance itself from the officer’s statements and announce disciplinary action.<\/p>\n
In a statement issued on Friday, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed that the officer was Osumah Frank and said appropriate disciplinary measures had commenced in accordance with established Nigeria Police Force regulations.<\/p>\n
Adebisi stressed that the comments were made in Frank’s personal capacity and did not represent the position, views or official disposition of either the Lagos State Police Command or the Nigeria Police Force.<\/p>\n
She said the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Tijani Fatai, had reiterated that all personnel were expected to maintain professionalism, civility, discipline and respect for members of the public at all times.<\/p>\n
According to the Command, wearing the police uniform carries an obligation to uphold the dignity and integrity of the Force. It said it would not tolerate conduct capable of bringing the institution into disrepute or undermining public confidence in the Police.<\/p>\n
The controversy comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with President Tinubu expected to seek another term and opposition politicians, including Atiku and Obi, remaining prominent figures in the emerging national contest.<\/p>\n
Obi, who contested the 2023 presidential election on the platform of the Labour Party, emerged as a major force in that election, particularly among young voters and in several parts of southern Nigeria. His performance also gave him a significant national profile and established him as a prominent figure in opposition politics.<\/p>\n
Atiku, the Peoples Democratic Party’s presidential candidate in 2023, has also remained active in national politics, while Tinubu has been President since May 2023 after winning the presidential election on the platform of the All Progressives Congress.<\/p>\n
The political configuration for 2027, however, remains fluid, with opposition politicians and parties exploring alliances and realignments. Consequently, the officer’s assertion that the presidential contest is exclusively a two-horse race represents a personal political opinion rather than an established electoral fact.<\/p>\n
The incident has also renewed attention on the requirement for political neutrality and professionalism among members of the Nigeria Police Force.<\/p>\n
As an institution vested with coercive state authority and responsible for maintaining law and order, the Police is expected to serve citizens without partisan, ethnic or other discriminatory considerations.<\/p>\n
The Lagos Command’s response reflects that distinction: an individual officer may hold personal political views, but statements made by a uniformed officer that appear partisan or derogatory cannot be allowed to pass as the institutional position of the Police.<\/p>\n
The disciplinary proceedings against Frank will now determine whether his conduct breached applicable regulations governing police personnel.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
