The political temperature in Obowo LGA rose noticeably on Wednesday as community and political leaders gathered to receive the ADP senatorial candidate for Okigwe Zone, Attorney Charles Chibuike Onyirimba.<\/p>\n
Hosted at the expansive residence of Hon. Felix Okonkwo, Onyirimba arrived with members of his campaign team to engage stakeholders and make a case for what he described as a new chapter in political representation for Okigwe Zone.<\/p>\n
The gathering provided the candidate with an opportunity to speak about his roots, his years of service and community leadership in the United States, and his reasons for returning home to seek a seat in the Senate.<\/p>\n
In his welcome remarks, Okonkwo received the Onyirimba team and underscored the importance of candidates taking their messages directly to the people, particularly at the grassroots, where the realities of governance are most deeply felt.<\/p>\n
For Chief Magnus Orjiako, Director of Security and Police Affairs of the Onyirimba Campaign Organisation, the visit was part of a deliberate effort to take the candidate’s message to communities across the six LGAs of Okigwe Zone.<\/p>\n
Orjiako said the mission went beyond soliciting votes.<\/p>\n
He said it was about creating direct contact with the people, listening to their concerns and giving them the opportunity to assess Onyirimba’s experience, ideas and capacity for legislative representation.<\/p>\n
He also used the occasion to make a strong case for competence in lawmaking, declaring that Okigwe should henceforth pay closer attention to the qualifications and capacity of those it sends to the legislature.<\/p>\n
According to him, lawmakers are entrusted with the responsibility of making laws that govern society and should therefore possess the knowledge and competence required for that assignment.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have reached a point where Okigwe must insist on sending qualified people to the legislature,\u201d Orjiako said, arguing that legislative representation requires people who understand the business of lawmaking and can effectively contribute to it.<\/p>\n
When Onyirimba eventually took the floor, he struck a distinctly personal note, telling the gathering that his ambition was not driven by the desire for a political title.<\/p>\n
\u201cI have not come before you to ask for a title. I have come to ask for an opportunity to serve,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He took the audience back to his formative years, recalling that he left the area in 1980 but never, in his words, left Okigwe behind.<\/p>\n
He spoke nostalgically of the streams, firewood, farms and early-morning struggles he knew as a young man, as well as the difficult conditions of an era when many communities had poor roads, inadequate water, little electricity and limited economic opportunities.<\/p>\n
Those experiences, he said, remained permanently etched in his consciousness.<\/p>\n
According to Onyirimba, leaving for the United States did not mean abandoning his roots. Rather, he said, his years abroad gave him opportunities to participate in the organisation and advancement of Nigerians and the Igbo community.<\/p>\n
He recalled his leadership role within the Igbo community in Georgia, his involvement in the development of the World Igbo Congress, his service as Honorary Nigerian Consul in Atlanta and his participation in Nigeria’s Olympic reception efforts in 1996.<\/p>\n
He said those engagements were never pursued merely for personal recognition.<\/p>\n
For him, he explained, leadership meant bringing people together, building institutions, opening doors and creating opportunities for others.<\/p>\n
It was this philosophy, he said, that brought him back home.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf I could help organise our people abroad, build institutions and open doors for others there,\u201d Onyirimba asked, \u201cwhy should I believe that Okigwe cannot be transformed here?\u201d<\/p>\n
He rejected the suggestion that Okigwe’s challenge was a shortage of capable people.<\/p>\n
According to him, the zone is endowed with intelligent, educated and talented men and women. The greater challenge, he argued, is having representation capable of converting that human capacity into practical results.<\/p>\n
The ADP candidate also sought to distinguish public service from personal enrichment.<\/p>\n
He said his motivation for seeking the Senate was not to accumulate wealth, but to deploy the experience, relationships and knowledge he had acquired over the years in the interest of the people.<\/p>\n
He spoke of young people in need of opportunities, elderly citizens deserving dignity, communities requiring infrastructure and entrepreneurs needing access to opportunities.<\/p>\n
Farmers, artisans and professionals, he added, also deserve representation that understands their everyday realities.<\/p>\n
Onyirimba subsequently turned his attention to the electorate, urging the people not to surrender their political power to intermediaries.<\/p>\n
He described the Permanent Voter’s Card as more than a mere document, saying it represents the citizen’s voice and authority to determine who speaks on their behalf.<\/p>\n

He urged voters to approach the 2027 election with an appreciation of the responsibility attached to their ballot and to freely choose the candidate they believe can effectively represent the interests of Okigwe Zone in Abuja.<\/p>\n
From Obowo, Onyirimba and his entourage proceeded to the sprawling campaign headquarters at Umuola, Ehime Mbano LGA, where another crucial engagement awaited them.<\/p>\n
There, the campaign leadership convened local government and ward chairmen and coordinators from across the six LGAs of Okigwe Zone.<\/p>\n
A roll call confirmed representation from all six local government areas, underscoring the campaign’s expanding organisational structure across the zone.<\/p>\n
Leaders of the Transformation Agenda and Divine Grassroots Movement were also present.<\/p>\n
Addressing the gathering, Onyirimba charged the three structures to operate as one political family, stressing the need for unity, coordination and disciplined grassroots mobilisation.<\/p>\n
He urged them to take the campaign’s message of hope to the people and translate the emerging political structure into sustained engagement at the ward and community levels.<\/p>\n
The twin engagements in Obowo and Ehime Mbano reinforced the campaign’s continuing push to take Onyirimba’s message directly to the grassroots as the race for the Okigwe Senate seat gathers momentum.<\/p>\n
