It is not being fought with campaign posters, loudspeakers or political rallies. It is taking place in private meetings, secluded compounds and late-night strategy sessions where a familiar class of desperate politicians is once again asking the same question they ask before every election: “How do we win, even if the people reject us?”

That question, more than anything else, explains why Okigwe Zone has repeatedly fallen short of its enormous potential.

For decades, our elections have often resembled carefully choreographed contests whose outcomes were influenced as much by manipulation as by the genuine wishes of the electorate. Every election cycle has produced promises of change, yet many of those who emerged victorious became accountable not to the people but to the crude machinery that delivered them into office.

The consequences are visible everywhere. Communities that should be connected by good roads remain isolated. Young people graduate into unemployment. Public facilities decay. Opportunities disappear. Families watch neighbouring zones move ahead while Okigwe struggles to explain why it remains trapped in a cycle of underdevelopment despite producing capable sons and daughters.

Rigged elections do not merely produce the wrong winners. They produce the wrong priorities.

A politician who steals power rarely feels compelled to serve the people because he believes his survival depends on political patrons rather than public approval. He invests more energy in maintaining the machinery of manipulation than in improving the lives of ordinary citizens. Governance becomes secondary. Self-preservation becomes everything.

That is why electoral fraud is not simply a political crime. It is an economic crime, a social crime and, ultimately, a crime against future generations.

The tragedy is that electoral fraud rarely begins on election day. It begins months earlier. It begins when eligible citizens refuse to register to vote because they believe elections are already decided. It begins when registered voters fail to collect their Permanent Voter Cards. It begins when misinformation convinces communities that voting is an exercise in futility. It begins when honest citizens stay away from politics, leaving the field to those who treat elections as commercial transactions.

The architects of electoral fraud understand one truth remarkably well: voter apathy is their greatest ally. When turnout is low, manipulation becomes easier. When citizens stay home, a handful of political operators can exercise disproportionate influence. When communities lose faith in democracy, democracy quietly loses them.

There are also more sophisticated methods. Vote buying and rewriting results remain one of the oldest weapons in the electoral arsenal.

Poverty has unfortunately become a campaign manager for crooked politicians. They distribute cash, food items and other inducements, hoping that temporary relief will erase four years of disappointment.

But every voter should ask one simple question before accepting any inducement: if a politician is willing to spend millions merely to obtain your vote, how much does he intend to recover after entering office?

The answer explains why public funds disappear so quickly after elections.

Another familiar tactic is intimidation. Rumours are deliberately spread to discourage voter turnout. Some communities are made to believe violence is inevitable. Others are threatened into silence. The objective is simple: frighten genuine voters away while allowing organised political bringandage to dominate polling units.

Then comes misinformation.

False announcements about changes in polling locations.

Fabricated stories about election postponements. Fake election results circulated on social media to create confusion and discourage participation.

In the digital age, lies travel faster than facts, and electoral fraud has adapted accordingly.

Yet every one of these strategies has one weakness. They collapse when citizens become informed, united and vigilant. That is precisely why those already plotting their usual tricks should prepare for disappointment.

Because the political atmosphere in Okigwe Zone is changing. More citizens are asking difficult questions. More young people are demanding accountability. More voters are refusing to be treated as commodities whose future can be purchased with a few thousand naira.

This growing political consciousness is the greatest threat to electoral manipulation. However, awareness alone is insufficient. It must be translated into action.

Every eligible citizen must register to vote. Those already registered must collect their PVCs without delay. Election day itself requires discipline. Arrive early. Remain peaceful. Vote according to your good conscience. Stay within lawful limits until the voting and counting processes are completed. Observe carefully. Encourage transparency.

Where irregularities occur, document them responsibly and report them through appropriate electoral and security channels. Democracy belongs not only to those who cast votes but also to those who protect the integrity of the process.

Religious organisations, traditional institutions, youth associations, women’s groups and professional bodies all have important roles to play. They should become centres of civic education rather than platforms for partisan mobilisation. Every sermon, village meeting and community gathering should remind citizens that protecting the ballot is protecting their collective future.

Parents should also teach their children an important lesson: A vote is not merchandise. It is not an item for auction. It is a sacred civic trust that shapes destinies. Selling it is equivalent to selling tomorrow.

Security agencies, electoral officials and accredited observers equally carry enormous responsibility. Their neutrality will determine whether public confidence grows or collapses. Every law-abiding voter deserves protection. Every genuine vote deserves equal respect.

Most importantly, politicians themselves should recognise that legitimacy obtained through the ballot is stronger than authority manufactured through manipulation. Leaders who emerge from credible elections govern with confidence because they know the people genuinely chose them. Those who emerge through fraudulent means spend their tenure looking over their shoulders.

History offers every generation defining moments. For Okigwe Zone, 2027 presents one such opportunity.

This election must not merely determine who occupies a political office. It must determine whether the people’s mandate still possesses value. Whether democracy remains meaningful. Whether public office belongs to citizens or to political cartels.

There are individuals who are undoubtedly planning to replay the familiar script. They are studying old formulas that may have worked in previous elections. They assume the people have forgotten. They assume fatigue has replaced vigilance. They assume poverty can still silence conscience.

They are making a dangerous miscalculation.

The electorate has learned painful lessons and is no longer naivety. Communities have watched the consequences of manipulated elections for too long. The patience of the people is no longer unlimited.

What many citizens now seek is not perfection but fairness. Not predetermined outcomes but genuine competition. Not manufactured victories but authentic mandates.

No electoral system is completely immune from abuse. But every electoral system can become stronger when citizens refuse to cooperate with those who seek to undermine it.

Ultimately, the most powerful electoral reform does not originate in Abuja. It begins in every village square, every family discussion, every church service, every market conversation and every polling unit where ordinary citizens decide that enough is enough.

The future of Okigwe Zone will not be stolen by politicians if the people refuse to surrender it. The merchants of electoral fraud have enjoyed long seasons of success because too many citizens believed they were invincible.

They are not.

Their greatest enemy is not another politician. It is an informed voter. It is a united community. It is a determined electorate that cannot be intimidated, cannot be deceived and cannot be bought.

If that spirit prevails in 2027, then the greatest casualty of the next election will not be any candidate. It will be electoral fraud itself. And that will mark the beginning of a new political chapter for Okigwe Zone, one in which public office is earned through the confidence of the people, not stolen through the manipulation of their will.

This is precisely where Attorney Charles Onyirimba and the Action Democratic Party (ADP) draw their greatest strength. Their consistent message has not been that power should be handed to any individual or political platform, but that the people alone must decide who governs them.

Their insistence is straightforward: let every candidate present his vision to the electorate, let every voter exercise his or her franchise freely, and let whoever secures the genuine mandate of the people emerge victorious. There must be no magomago, no manipulation, no intimidation, no vote-buying, and no underhand tactics designed to subvert the people’s will.

Democracy is not measured by who wins, but by whether the winner truly reflects the freely expressed will of the electorate. That is the only victory worthy of celebration and the only mandate capable of restoring confidence in governance across Okigwe Zone.

Iwuoma

Anthony Iwuoma is a newspaper columnist and public affairs analyst

By Anthony Iwuoma Kindly share: There is a silent battle already underway in Okigwe Zone.
