Nigeria’s ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has been thrown into fresh turmoil after Hon. Ahmad Ganga, a member of the Katsina State House of Assembly, declared himself the legitimate National Chairman of the party, setting the stage for a legal showdown that could further destabilise its leadership structure.
In a strongly worded press release issued on Wednesday, Ganga dismissed the authority of the current National Working Committee (NWC), describing it as an illegitimate body, presiding over the affairs of the party. He announced plans to approach the Federal High Court to challenge the leadership, seeking judicial intervention to dismantle what he termed an unlawful structure.
As part of his legal demands, Ganga said he would urge the court to direct the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw recognition of the existing APC leadership.
According to him, the move is necessary to safeguard the rule of law, enforce internal democracy, and restore due process within the party.
The development marks yet another twist in the APC’s growing internal crisis, with recurring disputes, threatening to fracture the party’s unity at a critical time in Nigeria’s political cycle.
Formed in 2013 as a merger of opposition forces determined to wrest power from the then-dominant Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the APC rode on promises of reform and institutional strength to secure victory in 2015. However, over time, the party has increasingly found itself entangled in the very patterns of factionalism and leadership disputes it once criticised.
Political watchers now point to a deeper irony: the APC appears to be experiencing a dose of the instability it has often been accused of fueling in rival parties, through defections, strategic interference, and power realignments that weakened opposition cohesion.
With parallel claims to leadership, resurfacing and court battles looming, the crisis raises serious concerns about the party’s internal coherence and its ability to effectively position itself ahead of the 2027 general elections.
As events unfold, the role of the judiciary and INEC will be pivotal in determining whether this latest upheaval will be contained, or spiral into a full-blown leadership crisis with far-reaching political consequences.
