Former Aviation Minister and diplomat-designate Femi Fani-Kayode has denied reports that the German government rejected his appointment as Nigeria’s ambassador. The statement comes amid widespread speculation on social media and in parts of the online media.
In March 2026, President Bola Tinubu approved Fani-Kayode’s posting to Germany, one of Nigeria’s key diplomatic assignments in Europe. His nomination had previously been confirmed by the Senate in December 2025.
However, some online reports claimed that Germany had rejected the nomination, citing concerns about Fani-Kayode’s past remarks on ethnic and religious issues. These reports suggested that such statements could be viewed as destabilizing, raising questions about his suitability for the ambassadorial role.
Fani-Kayode reacted swiftly on his social media account, calling the reports fake news. He accused political opponents of attempting to discredit his appointment, writing that these elements were “so pained by my appointment… doing everything to discredit me and scuttle it.” He also affirmed his commitment to serving Nigeria once officially posted.
Neither the German government nor Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued an official statement confirming or denying the alleged rejection. The lack of official communication has fueled speculation and contradictory reports across media platforms.
This controversy highlights ongoing tensions in Nigerian politics, particularly around high-profile diplomatic appointments and the influence of online narratives. It also underscores the sensitivity of diplomatic postings to influential countries like Germany.
For now, Fani-Kayode maintains that he remains Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Germany and intends to fulfill his duties once formally cleared.
