Public anger has surged across Nigeria following the circulation of a disturbing video allegedly filmed in Ozoro, a community in Delta State.
The disturbing footage, which surfaced on social media Thursday, depicts scenes of disorder and brutality as groups of young men pursue women through the streets, forcibly stripping them and subjecting them to public assault. In one particularly harrowing clip, a victim is completely stripped while onlookers cheer, an image that has sparked widespread outrage and condemnation from Nigerians both at home and in the diaspora.
Initial reports circulating online attempted to tie the attacks to a supposed cultural observance in the Isoko North area, including claims of an unwritten rule barring women from appearing outdoors after midday.
However, both community leaders and government authorities have firmly dismissed these assertions, stressing that such acts have no place in any legitimate cultural practice and must not be misrepresented as tradition.
Ozoro, located in Isoko North Local Government Area, is known for its educational institutions and relatively peaceful community life. However, this incident has cast a shadow over the town, prompting urgent calls for accountability and clarity from authorities.
The Delta State Government has firmly rejected claims that such an act is tied to any recognized cultural or traditional event in the state. Reacting to the viral video, Ossai Ovie Success, Senior Special Assistant on Media to the Governor, expressed shock and condemnation.
In a public statement, he emphasised that no legitimate festival in Delta State permits or endorses abuse of any kind. He described the incident as criminal and a gross misrepresentation of the state’s cultural values.
“The individuals involved will face the consequences of their actions, and we’re committed to ensuring justice is served.
“In Delta State, we won’t tolerate any form of abuse, and our laws protect citizens’ rights.
“No tradition or festival justifies harm or embarrassment towards anyone, especially women.
“We’re taking this seriously and working to prevent such incidents in the future,” Success, said.
According to him, authorities are already working to identify and apprehend those responsible. He assured the public that justice would not only be pursued but seen to be done.
The government reiterated its zero-tolerance stance on violence and harassment, particularly against women. It stressed that the laws of Delta State are clear in safeguarding the dignity and rights of all citizens, regardless of circumstance.
Officials also warned against attempts to disguise criminal behavior under the guise of tradition, noting that such narratives are both dangerous and misleading.
The video has triggered widespread condemnation from civil society groups, gender advocates, and concerned citizens, many of whom are demanding stricter enforcement of laws and better protection mechanisms for women in public spaces.
This incident has also reignited conversations about youth behavior, community accountability, and the role of digital platforms in exposing, and sometimes amplifying, acts of violence.
As investigations continue, the Delta State Government has pledged to strengthen preventive measures, including community sensitisation and collaboration with law enforcement agencies. The goal, officials say, is not only to punish offenders but to ensure such incidents never happen again.
For many Nigerians, the expectation is clear: justice must be swift, decisive, and serve as a deterrent to others.
