ADC unveils timetable for grassroots congresses Ahead of National Convention
The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has announced a schedule for a series of nationwide congresses that will culminate in its National Convention slated for April 14, as the party moves to renew its leadership structures and strengthen its internal democratic processes.
In a statement issued in Abuja on Sunday by the party’s National Organising Secretary, Prince Chinedu Idigo, and National Publicity Secretary, Malam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party outlined a phased programme of congresses that will take place across the country.
According to the statement, the process will begin with polling unit and ward congresses on April 7, where grassroots members will elect officials and representatives at the most local levels of the party structure.
This will be followed by local government area congresses scheduled for April 9, during which delegates and officials for the LGA structures will emerge. The next stage will be the state congresses on April 11, where state-level party executives are expected to be elected.
The sequence of activities will culminate in the ADC National Convention on April 14, where key national officers of the party are expected to be confirmed or elected in line with the party’s constitution.
Party officials explained that the congresses form part of the ADC’s routine constitutional obligation to periodically refresh its leadership across all tiers of the organisation.
“The congresses represent an important step in strengthening the party’s internal democracy and ensuring that leadership at every level reflects the will of members,” the statement said.
Members who wish to contest for available positions have been directed to obtain and submit their expression of interest and nomination forms through the party’s official website.
The leadership urged party faithful across the federation to actively participate in the exercise, stressing that adherence to the party’s constitution and guidelines would be strictly observed throughout the process.
It also called on members to conduct themselves peacefully and responsibly during the congresses, noting that the exercise is designed to consolidate the party’s democratic culture and unity ahead of future electoral contests.
The upcoming convention is expected to serve as a major gathering of party stakeholders, delegates and leaders from across the country, where strategic decisions about the party’s direction and organisational structure will be taken.
The ADC reaffirmed its commitment to transparency and due process in the conduct of the congresses and encouraged members to visit the party’s website for detailed information about the timetable and nomination procedures.
