President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday handed a clear and urgent mandate to newly appointed Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Ridwan Disu, charging him to restore peace, strengthen national security, and rebuild public confidence in the Nigeria Police Force.
The directive came during the decoration ceremony at the State House, Abuja, where Disu formally assumed office as the 23rd indigenous Inspector-General of Police, following the retirement of Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun. Disu’s appointment is pending ratification by the Nigeria Police Council and confirmation by the Senate, with the Council expected to meet next week.
“A Critical Moment for National Security”
Addressing the new police chief, President Tinubu described the appointment as coming at a pivotal time in Nigeria’s security trajectory.
“I made this decision for you to assume this responsibility. I know your record. I saw the dedication you exhibited while you were in Lagos when I was governor,” the President said, reflecting on their past professional intersections.
Tinubu urged Disu to lead with firmness and fairness while demanding professionalism at all levels of the Force. He stressed that the protection of lives and property must remain paramount, especially as Nigeria grapples with banditry, terrorism, kidnapping, and other violent crimes.
“Lead firmly but fairly. Demand professionalism at every level and ensure that the safety of lives and property remains our highest priority. It’s a daunting challenge. I know you can do it. You have my full support,” Tinubu declared.
He further charged the Acting IGP to align policing strategies with the security pillars of his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, emphasizing innovation, intelligence-driven operations, and inter-agency synergy as essential tools in confronting evolving threats.
“Nigeria is challenged with banditry, terrorism and other criminal activities. You will be part of the thinking and innovation to overcome them,” the President added.
A Surprise Elevation Near Retirement
Speaking shortly after his decoration, Disu described his appointment as unexpected, noting that it came barely 48 days before his scheduled retirement from service.
Nevertheless, he expressed gratitude to the President for the trust reposed in him and pledged to consolidate ongoing reforms within the Force while deepening professionalism and discipline.
The Nigeria Police Force, in a statement signed by the Force Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening internal security, enhancing community partnerships, and improving service delivery in line with global best practices.
Tribute to Egbetokun
President Tinubu also paid glowing tribute to the outgoing IGP, Egbetokun, who attended the ceremony alongside his spouse.
“To the outgoing Inspector-General, we are a grateful nation. Nigeria appreciates your contribution to maintaining law and order,” Tinubu said.
He urged the retired police chief to remain available to support his successor, noting that leadership continuity strengthens institutional legacy.
“You have not succeeded without a good successor. His success will also be part of your legacy,” the President remarked.
