Tension has gripped Owo Local Government Area, following the abduction of six worshippers from a Celestial Church along the Uso/Owo Expressway in Ondo State.
The attack reportedly occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, February 25, while congregants were holding a vigil service.
Armed assailants stormed the church premises and forcefully took six members to an undisclosed location, leaving the community in shock.
The Nigeria Police Force in Ondo State confirmed the incident in a statement issued by its spokesperson, DSP Abayomi Jimoh.
According to the police, officers swiftly responded after receiving a distress report and launched a coordinated operation, involving the Nigerian Army and local vigilante groups.
Security operatives have since intensified search efforts in and around Owo.
Authorities disclosed that one of the abducted worshippers has been rescued through joint security action. In addition, a suspected informant believed to have provided information to the attackers has been arrested and is currently assisting investigators.
Police assured residents that efforts are ongoing to secure the safe return of the remaining victims and apprehend those responsible for the attack.
Patrols have reportedly been reinforced along the expressway and surrounding areas to prevent further incidents.
The latest abduction has heightened concerns about safety in parts of the state, particularly along major highways and isolated areas often targeted by kidnappers.
Community members have called for sustained security presence and improved surveillance around worship centres, especially during late-night services.
Authorities say investigations are continuing, and further updates will be provided as operations progress.
