In a dramatic political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, the leadership, membership, and grassroots structures of four major political parties in Aboh-Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State have formally collapsed into the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
The parties affected by the sweeping defection include the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), and the Labour Party (LP), marking one of the most significant political shake-ups in the area in recent times.
The mass movement was sealed at a well-attended ceremony in Aboh-Mbaise, where leaders and members of the defecting parties were officially received into the ADC fold.
Addressing the gathering, the Chairman of ADC in Aboh-Mbaise, Chief Jonathan Onyeneke, described the development as more than a routine political merger.
According to him, the ADC represents “a movement committed to restoring human dignity, promoting inclusive development, and reshaping governance at both state and national levels.”
Onyeneke said the decision by leaders and members of the APC, PDP, APGA, and LP to align with the ADC reflected growing dissatisfaction with the status quo and a collective resolve to chart a new political direction for Imo State.
He commended the defectors for what he called a courageous step toward rescuing the state and the country from what he described as its current challenges, adding that the ADC platform would serve as a vehicle for people-centered leadership and accountable governance.
Political observers say the development could significantly alter the power dynamics in Aboh-Mbaise, traditionally regarded as a politically vibrant and influential local government area in Imo State. With structures from multiple parties now operating under a single platform, the ADC appears poised to consolidate grassroots support ahead of 2027.
While it remains to be seen how the affected parties will respond at the state level, the collapse of their local structures into the ADC signals intensifying political recalibration in Imo as permutations for the next election cycle gradually gather momentum.
The coming months are expected to test the durability of this new alliance and its potential to reshape the electoral landscape in the state.
