Donald Trump, United States President, on Thursday singled out Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for special recognition during the 74th National Prayer Breakfast held in Washington, D.C.
In a rare personal interjection during his address, President Trump paused to draw attention to Mrs. Tinubu’s presence among global leaders and dignitaries at the annual gathering. He described her as a respected woman of faith and influence, noting her role as a Christian pastor in Nigeria.
“We’re honored to be joined today by the First Lady of Nigeria, who also serves as a Christian pastor at the largest church in Nigeria. A very respected woman,” Trump said, briefly searching the audience before acknowledging her. “First Lady, please, where are you? Thank you very much. It’s a great honor. Very respected person, too.”
The acknowledgement drew attention at the event, a long-standing Washington tradition that brings together political leaders, clergy, diplomats, and public figures from across the world for prayer, reflection, and discussions on faith and leadership.
Mrs. Tinubu’s recognition comes against the backdrop of evolving diplomatic engagements between Washington and Abuja, particularly on matters of security, governance, and religious freedom. In recent months, the U.S. administration has shown increased interest in Nigeria’s internal security challenges and the protection of faith-based communities.
The Federal Government has consistently maintained that the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to upholding the rights of all Nigerians, regardless of religious affiliation.
The National Prayer Breakfast, held annually, serves as a platform for fostering interfaith understanding and strengthening diplomatic ties through shared values of faith, service, and leadership.
