Abubakar Malami, former Attorney General of the Federation (AGF), and his son have been arraigned on over alleged involvement in terrorism financing.
The duo was charged before Monday before the Federal High Court in Abuja, following investigations by the Department of State Services (DSS).
The defendants appeared before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik on a five-count charge, entering pleas of not guilty to all allegations. According to the DSS, Malami is accused of deliberately aiding and abetting the financing of terrorism by allegedly failing to prosecute suspected financiers during his tenure as AGF, despite case files being submitted to his office. The agency also claims that he and his son engaged in preparatory acts connected to terrorism by unlawfully possessing prohibited firearms and ammunition without the required license.
Items listed in the charges include a Sturm Magnum 17-0101 firearm, 16 live Redstar AAA 5.20 cartridges, and 27 expended cartridges of the same brand.
Abubakar Malami served as Nigeria’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice from 2015 to 2023 under President Muhammadu Buhari. His tenure was marked by high-profile cases involving financial crimes, terrorism, and government corruption. Malami has previously faced scrutiny from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged fraud and money laundering. The current charges reflect broader investigations into the financing of terrorism and the role of influential officials in either enabling or failing to prevent such activities.
The case was adjourned to a later date for further proceedings.
