At least four residents of Gwargwaba village in Nahuce District, Bungudu Local Government Area, Zamfara State, were brutally killed on Thursday evening after suspected bandits attacked the community. Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers set multiple homes ablaze, leaving some victims trapped inside.
The raid, which occurred around 6 p.m., saw heavily armed assailants storming the village, destroying property, and setting fire to food stores and livestock. Security monitoring platform Bakatsine confirmed the deaths on Saturday, describing the scene as one of widespread devastation.
According to reports, the attack was triggered by the villagers’ refusal to pay illegal levies imposed by the armed group, a common practice in many rural communities across Zamfara and northwestern Nigeria. Bakatsine condemned the raid, warning that the pattern of violence linked to extortion continues to threaten the safety of rural populations.
Despite ongoing military operations in Zamfara, the state remains a hotspot for banditry, with recurring incidents of mass kidnappings, killings, and destruction of property, leaving communities vulnerable and terrorised.
