Two additional members of the Rivers State House of Assembly have withdrawn their support for the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, urging their colleagues to embrace dialogue and a peaceful resolution.
The lawmakers—Barile Nwakoh, representing Khana Constituency I, and Emilia Amadi of Obio/Akpor Constituency II—made their position known on Tuesday, just 24 hours after two other legislators publicly stepped back from the impeachment move.
While maintaining that the governor and his deputy allegedly breached certain constitutional provisions, the duo said their decision to reconsider was influenced by interventions from respected leaders and stakeholders within the state, who appealed for restraint and political maturity.
With this development, four out of the 26 lawmakers who initially signed the impeachment notice have now withdrawn their backing, exposing growing divisions within the Assembly and casting uncertainty over the fate of the impeachment process.
The Rivers State House of Assembly is expected to reconvene on January 15, 2026, to further deliberate on the matter as the political situation continues to unfold.
Earlier, the Minority Leader of the House, Sylvanus Nwankwo (Omuma Constituency), and Peter Abbey (Degema Constituency) had also pulled out of the impeachment push. Both lawmakers cited appeals from influential political figures within and outside Rivers State, calling on the Assembly to seek peaceful alternatives rather than escalate the crisis.
They urged their colleagues to suspend the impeachment process and pursue dialogue as a means of resolving the leadership impasse gripping the state.
