Full-time professors in Nigerian universities will now earn an additional ₦1.8 million annually, while full-time Readers are to receive an extra ₦870,000 per year, following the approval of a new allowance by the Federal Government.
The development was announced on Wednesday in Abuja by the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, during the presentation of the renegotiated agreement between the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU).
The new benefit, tagged the “Professorial Cadre Allowance,” is designed to apply specifically to full-time academic staff at the professorial and Reader levels.
According to the Minister, the allowance forms part of broader efforts by the Federal Government to improve the welfare of university lecturers and strengthen the higher education system.
Further details of the agreement are expected to be released soon.
