Two key members of the team of British-Nigerian boxing star, Anthony Joshua, have been confirmed dead, following a tragic road accident that nearly claimed the life of the former world heavyweight champion.
The victims, identified as Latz, Joshua’s personal trainer, and Sina, his strength and conditioning coach, died in the crash, which occurred on Monday along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The accident involved the vehicle conveying Joshua and members of his entourage and a stationary truck.
Sina, a close friend and long-time fixture in Joshua’s camp, had only recently overseen the boxer’s physical conditioning ahead of his fight with Jake Paul two weeks ago. Latz, described as both a trainer and confidant, had worked closely with Joshua for years.
In a joint press statement issued by the governments of Ogun and Lagos states, authorities confirmed that the crash claimed two lives while Joshua and another passenger sustained injuries.
According to the statement, Joshua and the injured passenger were immediately evacuated to a specialised medical facility in Lagos, where they underwent extensive clinical assessments. Medical officials confirmed that both patients are stable and currently do not require emergency medical intervention.
“Anthony Joshua has remained conscious and has been relating well with members of his family since the incident,” the statement said, adding that a comprehensive medical team has been assembled to closely monitor his condition.
The two state governments expressed deep sympathy to the families of the deceased, offering prayers for strength and comfort, as they mourn their loss. They also assured the public that investigations have commenced to determine the exact circumstances surrounding the accident.
Authorities further pledged that the injured would continue to receive the best possible medical care and thanked members of the public for their concern and goodwill messages.
A request was also made for privacy for Anthony Joshua and his family, as they grieve and recover from the traumatic incident.
The statement was jointly signed by Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Information to the Ogun State Governor, and Gbenga Omotoso, Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy.
