The Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has welcomed the decision of the United States, US, to assist Nigeria in the fight against mass killings and insecurity in the country.
Speaking in Jos, the Plateau State capital, on Tuesday, in a keynote address at the opening of the association’s Fourth Quarterly National Executive Council meeting, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, the President of CAN, noted how painful it was for Nigeria to trend globally for negative reasons.
However, he added that it was welcome to the Christian community in Nigeria if such international attention would be necessary to propel the government to act and protect lives and bring lasting peace in Nigeria.
“CAN has spoken clearly and courageously on this matter, and we stand unwavering by our position that there is Christian genocide in Nigeria,” Okoh said.
According to him, the Christian community remained a people of hope, regardless of the challenges it faced.
The CAN President called on Christian leaders to remain steadfast, prayerful, and courageous, and to continue to sow seeds of hope in the midst of sorrow, adding: “And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
He owed that CAN would persist in canvassing for justice and security for its members.
“Let me assure you that CAN will not relent. We will continue to demand justice. We will continue to call for accountability,” the cleric declared.
Describing the continued displacement of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) as a “painful indictment on the national conscience”, he urged the government to urgently work towards their urgent resettlement in their ancestral lands.
