Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, a former Governor of Borno State has rubbished reports purporting that he accused Vice President Kashim Shettima of creating Boko Haram.
The former governor in a statement issued on Saturday and titled: “A Lie Taken Too Far: Shettima, Ali Modu Sheriff Are Not on War Path,” described the report as “fabrication, devoid” as well as “mischievous but also a dangerous piece of fake news.”
“The attention of Senator Ali Modu Sheriff, former Governor of Borno State and respected elder statesman, has been drawn to a false and malicious publication circulating online under the headline, ‘It’s Not Me, It’s Shettima Who Created Boko Haram — Sheriff Reveals’,” the statement read.
“The said story is a complete fabrication, devoid of truth, and a deliberate attempt to mislead the public, malign Senator Sheriff, and sow discord within the nation’s political landscape.”
Sheriff denied granting any interview, or engaging with journalists on the matter and could not have made such a statement, which he further described as a dangerous piece of fake news aimed at undermining him.
According to the statement: “The Senator maintains his unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s security and stability and finds it deeply regrettable that unscrupulous individuals and platforms would resort to peddling falsehoods for cheap political gain.”
He enjoined members of the public and the media to discountenance the story, warning that his legal team had been instructed to identify and take action against those behind the defamatory publication.
Sheriff reiterated that he is committed to truth, justice, and accountability, vowing to seek full legal redress if the story is not retracted.
