The proposed national convention of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, was on Friday stopped by a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.
The order stopping the elective convention, which was billed to hold on November 15–16, 2025, in Ibadan, Oyo State, was at the behest of two state chairmen and a state secretary of the party, who filed a suit over alleged breach of the party’s constitution in the convention’s preparation.
The plaintiffs are Austin Nwachukwu (Imo PDP chairman), Amah Nnanna (Abia PDP chairman), and Turnah George (South-South PDP Secretary).
They contended that the planned convention violated the PDP constitution and due process, urging the court to restrain the party’s leadership and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from proceeding with the exercise.
The plaintiffs asked the court to stop the proposed convention, contravened the party’s constitution, the 1999 Constitution, and the Electoral Act in the processes leading to the convention.
According to their counsel, the party did not conduct congress in 14 states, arguing that the matter cannot be dismissed as an internal party matter but whether the defendants we’re in breach of the law.
Ruling on the matter, the presiding judge, Justice James Omotosho, ordered the PDP to halt further plans for the convention, citing breach of rules.
Consequently, he directed the party to go back and reconcile the contentious issues and also comply with the statutory 21-day notice before going ahead with the planned convention.
