The Presidency has released comprehensive information on 80 individuals granted revised clemency terms, following a formal review of their conduct, rehabilitation progress, and readiness for reintegration into society.
The majority of those included in the revised list had been convicted for unlawful mining activities. According to the Presidency, they were found to have demonstrated genuine remorse, maintained good behavior while in custody, and fulfilled the required commitments for post-release support and supervision.
Under the new terms, their original three-year prison sentences have been reduced to two years. This decision followed the submission of letters of undertaking and sponsorship assurances from responsible stakeholders, including Senator Ikra Aliyu Bilbis, confirming support for their reintegration and livelihood empowerment.
All 80 individuals are currently detained at the Medium Security Custodial Centre (MSCC) in Agodi, Oyo State. The revised clemency aligns with directives issued by the Presidential Advisory Committee in April 2025, which emphasized balancing justice with rehabilitation and social reintegration.
The release further includes detailed profiles of the beneficiaries, covering their names, ages, offenses, sentencing dates, time already served, and the newly approved sentence adjustments. Among those listed are Lawani Lurwanu (20), Yusuf Alhassan (33), Shehu Umar (28), and Isiaka Adamu (40).
This development underscores the Federal Government’s commitment to rehabilitation-focused justice, particularly for first-time offenders and younger convicts. Authorities say the measures are designed to reduce repeat offenses, promote social stability, and provide structured opportunities for skills development and entrepreneurial growth upon release.
