The College of Medicine, University of Lagos (CMUL), has concluded arrangements for its 63rd Founder’s Day Lecture.
According to Prof. Ademola Oremosu, the Provost of the college disclosed this on Tuesday at a news conference in Lagos.
Represented by Prof. Daniel Odebiyi, the Deputy Provost of the College, Oremosu said the lecture is aimed at transforming healthcare in Nigeria.
Shedding more light on the origination of the lecture, he said it was in commemoration of the College’s establishment in 1983.
Oremosu explained that the occasion would be the 63rd Founder’s Day Lecture and the 18th Horatio Oritsejolomi Thomas Memorial Lecture, conducted biannually.
According to him, the occasion is usually used to raise funds to increase and develop the University, saying that the motive is to make the Collage a global research hub.
Speaking on the theme of the lecture: “Transforming Healthcare: The Role of Politicial Leadership” Oremosu explained that it seeks to explore positive impacts and contributions the political leaders could make to grow the healthcare system.
He noted that an Alumnus and also the guest speaker of the programme, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, would deliver the lecture, exploring how the political field could be used to improve healthcare.
He added the Guest Speaker, being a Politician, would explore how political innovations could be used to grow the healthcare system.
“In October 1983, the memorial lecture was instituted by the then Dean of the College. And usually we invite our alumni because the programme is all about the Founder’s day.
“So, the Founder’s lecture is programme that bring together the Alumni of the University, to deliberate and proffer strategies and innovations to improve the facility.
“And it is usually an avenue to raise funds to improve what we have on ground in the University, as people will make donations or even pick up a project to execute for the University,” he said.
He, therefore, advised that people should develop the habit of giving back to the society, “always back to see what you could do to give back to the schools that made us”.
Speaking on the challenges of the Collage, Oremosu identified “Space” as a major problem limiting expansion of the facility.
According to him, the situation has made the Collage to consider ‘going up’ in its building constructions in order to create space for expansion.
“However, some people are actually suggesting relocation, but if am asked, I will suggest going into highrise buildings, which we have already started as certain buildings have been pulled down to erect high structures to accommodate more activities and departments/courses.
“Presently, we have pulled down some buildings like the animal house and the anatomy department to ‘go up’ and raise a five storey building and I think is the right way to go or probably establish an Annex,” he said.
He noted that prominent dignitaries including the Chief of Staff to Nigeria’s President, Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, the past Provost and Alumni of the University among others would be present at the lecture.
