The Lagos State Police Command has said the man, who was arrested for allegedly planning to install himself as the Obi of Lagos has confessed that it was a scam.
Babaseyi Oluseyi, the command’s Deputy spokesperson, in a statement, said Chibuike Azubuike, the 65-year-old suspect, told the police during interrogation that the purported unveiling of a N1.5 billion of the Palace of the Obi of Lagos was purely a fraudulent scheme aimed at fleecing members of the public and guests under false pretences.
Oluseyi added that Azubuike admitted that the entire installation exercise was fabricated to give an air of legitimacy to fraud, and that hew was neither a traditional ruler nor has any claim to the title of ‘Obi of Lagos.’
The police also disclosed that Azubuike, who was arrested alongside three accomplices at Apple Hall in the Amuwo Odofin area of Lagos, last Saturday, misrepresented himself as an engineer whereas he was merely a building materials supplier without any professional qualification.
Azubuike’s plan was to use the traditional installation to build trust and attract high-profile individuals, hoping to collect donations, pledges for the phoney palace project.
According to the police spokesperson, the palace unveiling was nothing but a front to legitimise fraud.
