Simon Ekpa, the self-appointed Prime Minister of Biafra, was on on Monday, slammed with a six-year jail term by a Finnish court after he was found guilty of inciting terrorism and participated in the activities of a terrorist organisation between August 2021 and November 2024.
The Päijät-Häme district court in Finland found the 40-year-old guilty of using his social media platforms to incite terror acts in Nigeria, belonging to a terrorist organisation, and seeking the independence of Biafra through illegal means.
He was consequently sentenced to six years in jail.
According to Finnish newspaper Yle, the judges said Ekpa had used his “significant social media following” to aggravate tensions in Nigeria’s south-east.
The three-member panel of judges also described him as “an influential member of a militant separatist movement whose goal was to actualise the carving out of a Biafra state from Nigeria.”
The court also established that Ekpa supplied groups in the region with weapons, explosives, and ammunition “through his network of contacts” and actively encouraged violence via posts on social media platform X.
Ekpa was also convicted of aggravated tax fraud and violating the provisions of Finland’s Attorneys Act.
Additionally, the court also found Ekpa guilty of tax fraud and violating the Lawyers Act, as he was found guilty of the violation charge after his role as a paralegal was scrutinised.
