The ravaging flood that occurred in Adamawa State on Sunday killed 23 persons with several others still missing.
even as displaced hippopotamus killed another place.
This was confirmed by the state governor, Ahmadu Fintiri, in Yola, the state capital, on Monday.
The governor visited the affected communities in Yola-South Local Government, condoling with the victims.
He met displaced families at the temporary displacement camp at Yelewa Primary School, and reassured them of his government’s commitment to providing relief materials to ameliorate their hardship.
Fintiri disclosed that the state government would immediately set up a technical committee in collaboration with the Adamawa State Emergency Management Agency and the National Emergency Management Agency to assess the full scale of the damage caused by the flood.
In a related development, apprehension has enveloped the people as displaced hippopotamuses have invaded Guyuk and Shelleng Local Government Areas of Adamawa State.
One person on Monday lost his life to an attack by one of the animals in the Banjiram community.
According to Shalom Kassa, the Chairman of Guyuk Local Government, the hippopotamuses were displaced by flooding around the Kiri Dam in Shelleng, and now within communities, farmlands, and riverbanks, describing it as a serious threat.
He added: “This is a serious threat to human lives and means of livelihoods; the animals are destroying farmlands, invading flooded homes, and endangering residents and livestock.”
