The Federal Government has kicked against the protest by Ghanaians, demanding the expulsion of Nigerians from their country.
Hundreds of Ghanaians had staged a protest against Nigerians, accusing them of involvement in prostitution, kidnapping, ritual killings, and violent crimes in Ghana.
The protesters were on Tuesday seen in a viral video carrying placards with different inscriptions, such as “Armed robbery and violent attacks must stop,” “Our health at stake due to mass prostitution,” “Nigerians are kidnapping and using people for rituals,” and “Our kids are getting missing because of Igbos.”
However, the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, NIDCOM, has criticised the development, saying it was wrong to brand all Nigerians living in Ghana as criminals.
Abdur-Rahman Balogun, Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols, NIDCOM, in a statement said Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman/CEO NIDCOM, condemned the action of the Ghanaians.
“Nigerians are not criminals. They are good ambassadors wherever they find themselves while those bad ones should be fish out and face the necessary sanctions,” she stated.
“Ghana and Nigeria are like siamese twins. They are brothers and such in the spirit of ECOWAS and regional integration should continue to live in peace like brothers.”
Dabiri-Erewa advised Nigerians living in Ghana to maintain the peace and avoid being provoked or indulging in violence receiving diplomatic attention.
She also urged both sides to refrain from using inciting words to avoid escalating the matter.
Furthermore, the NIDCOM boss debunked the viral videos purporting the destruction of Nigerians’ shops by Ghanaians.
“There is no evidence to that and we must at all cost prevent any reprisal attacks,” she disclosed,cwhike hailing the Ghanaian and Nigeria High Commissioners for their efforts to control the situation.
The Nigerian Minister of State, Foreign Affairs, Dabiri-Erewa added, has also contacted the Ghanaian authorities and had taken some pro- active measures.
