A canoe mishap in Taura Local Government area of Jigawa State has reportedly claimed four lives.
It was gathered that the ill-fated canoe, conveying 17 persons mostly young girls aged between 10 and 13 years, from Digawa Village in Jahun Local Government Area to Zangon Maje Town in Taura LGA on Sunday evening capsized in Zangon Maje, Taura Local Government Area.
Badruddeen Tijjani Mahmud, Spokesman of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Jigawa State Command, who confirmed the incident in a statement issued to newsmen, said while seven of the victims were rescued, four people died, with five still missing.
“Jigawa State Command, regrets to report a tragic boat mishap that occurred on Sunday, 27th July 2025, at approximately 1700hrs in Zangon Maje, Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State,” the statement read.
According to him, the tragedy involved a canoe, which capsized mid-way through the journey.
He added that rescue efforts, led by the NSCDC in collaboration with local divers and community volunteers is still ongoing in a bid to locate the missing individuals.
It is not yet clear what caused the accident but investigations are ongoing to ascertain the circumstances surrounding the incident.
However, Commandant Bala Bawa Bodinga, the State Commandant of NSCDC, lauded the prompt response of the Corps’ personnel and volunteers involved in the rescue operation
He also commiserated with the affected families and Digawa and Zangon Maje communities.
