The 2023 presidential flag bearer of the PDP made his decision known in a letter dated July 14, announcing his immediate resignation. However, the letter was made public on Wednesday
“I am writing to formally resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) with immediate effect,” the letter reads.
“I would like to take this opportunity to express my profound gratitude for the opportunities I have been given by the Party. Serving two full terms as Vice President of Nigeria and being a Presidential candidate twice has been one of the most significant chapters of my life.
“As a founding father of this esteemed Party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision.
“However, I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for. It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognizing the irreconcilable differences that have emerged.”
Atiku , who is one of the main promoters of the opposition coalition and the African Democratic Congress, ADC, thanked the PDP for its support over the years and wished it the best.
Following on the heels of Atiku’s exit, all local government and ward chairmen of Jada Local Government Area in Adamawa State, where he hails from also ditched the PDP.
He also admitted that despite Atiku’s stature as a formidable figure, the PDP structure remained too resilient to be dismantled by the departure of any individual.
He dismissed the reports that PDP members in Atiku’s ward had all followed him, “The PDP in Jada remains as it has long been, to the best of our knowledge. If the leaders and members of the PDP in that ward had gone out of the party with Atiku, they would have informed the party leadership at the state headquarters in Yola.”
