The Presidency has denied reports of misunderstanding between President Bola Tinubu Vice President Kashim Shettima ahead of the 2027 general elections.
It further said the president had no plans to drop his deputy since he has not yet emerged as the candidate of the party.
According to Bayo Onanuga, the special adviser to the president on information and strategy, the issue of who would run as the vice president of Tinubu will be resolved after the convention of All Progressives Congress, APC, in 2026.
Onanuga, who spoke in an interview, added that a candidate must first emerge before anyone talks about his or her running mate.
“That’s what happened under Buhari; he was nominated first and later picked his running mate. You don’t do both at once,” he clarified.
“Once INEC releases the timetable, the party convention will hold, and if the president is nominated again, he will choose his running mate.”
He also denied reports of an existing rift between the president and his vice, saying that though Tinubu changed his deputy twice while serving as Lagos State governor, it is wrong to claim that there is a pattern.
“So, it’s wrong to say he has a pattern of discarding deputies. There were specific political circumstances each time. That’s what I’m explaining,” the presidential aide said.
