The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has elected Chris Piwuna, a professor of mental health at University of Jos, UNIJOS, as its 14th President.
Pinuwa emerged as the winner of the election conducted during the union’s 23rd National Delegates Conference in Benin, the Edo State capital.He polled 216 to defeat Prof. Adamu Babayo of Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University, who scored 118 votes in a hot contest.
Pinuwa, who succeeds Emmanuel Osodeke, a professor of soil science at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia, and would steer the affairs of the union in the next two years.He had served as ASUU Vice President, and is notable for his firm stance on the revitalisation of the university system and welfare of the staff.
The new Vice-President is Dr. Austen Sado of University of Port Harcourt. He scored 232 votes, to beat
Prof. Olusiji Sowande of Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, the outgoing Treasurer of the union, who got 174 votes.
Adamu Peter, the Chairman of the Kaduna State University chapter of the union, emerged as the new ASUU treasurer after polling 296 votes to defeat Prof. Denis Aribodo of Nmamdi Azikiwe University, Akwa, who got 106 votes.
