1. Germany Surrenders in WWII (VE Day) –1945
What happened: Nazi Germany formally surrendered to the Allied forces, ending World War II in Europe.
How and why: After Hitler’s suicide and the crumbling of German defenses, Admiral Karl Dönitz authorized the surrender, signed at Reims and Berlin.
Aftermath: Victory in Europe (VE) Day was celebrated with massive public rejoicing. However, WWII continued in the Pacific Theater until Japan’s surrender in August.
2. Sinking of the Lusitania (1915 )
What happened: A German U-boat torpedoed the British ocean liner RMS Lusitania off the Irish coast, killing 1,198 civilians, including 128 Americans.
How and why: Germany had declared the seas around Britain a war zone. The Lusitania was believed to be carrying war materials, making it a target.
Aftermath: Outrage over the incident pushed U.S. public opinion closer to entering World War I, though the U.S. would officially join two years later in 1917.
3. Battle of Dien Bien Phu Ends (1954)
What happened: Viet Minh forces defeated French colonial troops at Dien Bien Phu, signaling the end of French rule in Indochina.
How and why: The French sought to draw the Viet Minh into open battle but underestimated their enemy’s resolve and supply capabilities.
Aftermath: The defeat led to the Geneva Accords, partitioning Vietnam into North and South — laying the groundwork for the Vietnam War.
