Court sentences gospel singer Osinachi’s husband to death by hanging

The Federal Capital Territory High Court sitting in Wuse on Monday, sentenced the Peter Nwachukwu, husband of the late gospel singer, Osinachi Nwachukwu, to death by hanging.

Nwachukwu was convicted by Justice Njideka Nwosu-Iheme, who dismissed his no-case submission and found him guilty of culpable homicide in connection with the death of his wife on April 8, 2022.

The convict was arraigned on June 3, 2022, with a 23-count charge filed by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation.

The charges bordered on culpable homicide, spousal battery, cruelty to children and criminal intimidation.

The prosecution called 17 witnesses, including two of the deceased’s children, and tendered 25 exhibits during the trial.

Nwachukwu testified in his defence and called four other witnesses as well as presenting four exhibits.

However, Justice Nwosu-Iheme ruled that the prosecution, represented by Mrs Aderonke Imana, had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt and sentenced him accordingly despite pleas for leniency from his counsel, Reginald Nwali.

He was also sentenced to additional prison terms, ranging from six months to three years on several other counts and a fines, totalling N700,000.

The gospel singer, who became famous through her collaboration with Prospa Ochimana on the gospel hit song, Ekwueme in 2017, was killed by her husband on April 8, 2022, following a series of domestic abuse.

She was aged 42 years.
