Umar Namadi, Jigawa State Governor, on Monday tore the membership cards of the People’s Democratic Party, saying the has almost extinct.
The torn cards belonged to defectors to the All Progressives Congress, APC, who paid him a visit at his residence at the Government House, Dutse.
While welcoming the defectors from the Dutse metropolis to the ruling party, Namadi said the PDP’s popularity had significantly declined, with many of its members pouring into the APC.
“We all know that there is almost no PDP left in Jigawa. As you join us in the APC, we believe the rest of your colleagues still there will soon follow,” he said.
He assured the defectors that they would be fully integrated into the APC’s structure and treated equally.
“We promise to carry you along just like every other APC member. APC is a party of equality and purpose,” he said.
Nasir Alhassan, who spoke on behalf of the defectors, thanked the governor for receiving them warmly.
According to him, about 500 members had left the PDP to join the APC to be part of the development of Jigawa State, adding that their decision was informed by the PDP’s lack of direction and poor leadership.
He posited that the APC seemed to be in control, with the governor’s leadership and popularity playing a significant role in the party’s growing strength.
“We were tired of the PDP’s leadership crisis and stagnation,” Alhassan stated.
