A pastor with the Church of Christ in Nations (COCIN), James Musa Mareen, has recounted a harrowing experience in which he was brutally attacked and left for dead by terrorists in Plateau State.

In an exclusive interview with TRIBUNE, Pastor Mareen shared the horrifying details of how he was ambushed, beaten, and thrown into a well with his limbs chained and weighed down by a large stone.

The attack occurred on April 1, 2025, as Pastor Mareen was travelling from Laka village to Daffo for an outreach programme. Unaware of the terrorist invasion that had struck nearby Hurti the previous day, he found himself confronted by armed militias on the route.

The assailants, identified as Fulani militias by survivors in the area, stopped him on his motorcycle and carried out a brutal assault with machetes. He sustained deep cuts to his head, arms, and legs before falling unconscious.

Rather than receiving the help he had briefly hoped for, the pastor was led deeper into the bush under the pretense of getting medical attention.

There, his captors restrained his wrists and legs, placed a large stone between them, and hurled him into a well. He remained in the well for several hours, miraculously surviving despite his injuries and the dangers inside.

In his words; “When I asked if we were still going to the hospital, their leader said a doctor would come and take care of me there. At that point, it dawned on me that they were out to kill me, so I started praying. One of them was about to shoot me when another intervened, and they all agreed to throw me into a nearby well. My wrists and legs were chained behind me, with a large stone placed in between, and I was thrown into the well.”
